Ackson Curtis (John Cusack) gets divorced from his wife (Amanda Peet) and is now a lonely person who works for the namesake as a limousine driver and also a writer. Meanwhile, his ex-wife and children start a new life by living along with her new boyfriend. On the other side, in Guatemala it happens that hundreds of people have committed suicide after giving into the belief that 2012 is indeed the end of the world which is known as the '2012 Hypothesis'.  Immediately after the tragic incident, the IHC (Institute for Human Continuity), a secret organization, which foresees that the world is really going to end, begins the construction of mammoth space arks below the Himalayan mountains as a safety operation meant for the survival of the human race and to try to save them from the end of the world. This is as part of a major step by the IHC, which has been given the responsibility by the governments belonging to various countries across the world for saving the human race from getting extinct by of the  governments of the world give the IHC the task to save the human race when the so called 'doomsday' happens.

However, when they get to know that a huge flood of global intensity caused by the Earth crust displacement will occur much faster than previously thought, they must reach to these ships fast enough in order to save the human race before everything is lost. Los Angeles is destroyed entirely when the tectonic plates collapse and fall into the rising seas all over the world. On the other hand, Yellowstone super volcano also erupts besides massive earthquakes occur in South America and the Vatican gets extinct due to that effect. As flood situation worldwide stares getting much worse, the US government officially announces that it is the end of the world. A group of survivors, including Jackson Curtis and his family make their way to China before they can get over one of the great arks and save themselves from the mammoth tidal waves sweeping ferociously across the Earth.

The film is the visual representation to the original idea of a global doomsday event which coincides with the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar's current cycle on or around December 21, 2012 according to the northern hemisphere's winter solstice. The film makes a great viewing and draws much attention giving into the fact that what may really happen in case doomsday occurs in reality. The direction has been excellent and excellent performances by all the lead actors.
