Hindi

“Paa” is one of the most anticipated and awaited movie of the year for several reasons- Big B’s child act, R.Balki’s directorial venture after the success of “Cheenikum” and many more. The expectations of this movie rose to a very high extent once the promos started airing on TV screens. It came out to theatres this Friday and one could say that the team of “Paa” has met the expectations to a certain level.

The story revolves around a 12-year-old boy Auro (Amitabh Bachan) suffering from Progeria, a very rare (one in 8 million) genetic condition, with the most visible symptom being aggressive ageing. Though mentally Auro is a 12-year-old kid, he looks physically like a 65 year old man. He lives with his mom Vidya (Vidya Balan) who is doctor by profession. She raises him with the help of her mother (Arundhati Naag) as she has differences with her husband Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachan). Amol is a politician by profession. Amol and Vidya love each other during their college days and Vidya becomes pregnant before marriage. Amol suggests Vidya of abortion and she dumps her for his selfish thoughts. Amol is not ready for marriage and wanted to follow his father into Politics. The story is more about Son – Mom relationship rather than Father-Son relationship as depicted in promos.

This movie is single handedly carried by Amitabh Bachan. He is undoubtedly the Emperor of Indian Cinema. It is really amazing to see of how he comes out with different characters in his career spanning more than four decades. There are no words to describe his acting in this movie. In fact, one would forget Big B and instead see Auro in this character. He gets the viewers into the skin of his character. Vidya Balan as Auro’s Mom has done a very good job and so is Abhishek Bachan as his father. But his character has lots of negative shades. Paresh Rawal is wasted in his role. Arundhati Naag as Auro’s granny has done a good job. Pratik Katare as Auro’s friend Vishnu is fabulous to watch. All the child artists have done a tremendous job and are pleasant to watch on screen. It’s a pleasure to watch Jaya bachan in a guest appearance introducing all the characters in the movie.

On the technical front, R.Balki has churned out another decent movie after Cheenikum. His direction needs to be applauded though there are some dull moments. Make up by Christien Tinsley and Domini Till is outstanding and is in Hollywood standards. P.C.Sriram’s cinematography is exemplary and Illayaraja’s music is very good. Though the first half is good in parts, the movie post-interval makes you forget the dull moments in the first half. Made with a shoestring budget of about 15 crore, this movie is definitely bound to be a hit. One has to wait to watch for a couple of weeks to decide its exact box-office potential but one thing is for sure- Big B is going to sweep all the awards for his mesmerizing performance. Even the viewer can get his money worth for just a glimpse of Big B as Auro. This one is definitely a must watch movie.

The team of Hera-Pheri has come up once again to re-create the magic and one could say that they have partly succeeded. Nitin (Akshay kumar) works as a butler, cook, watchman, driver and a gardener to a wealthy female industrialist (Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. He always wants to do something big in life so that he can become rich and marry the love of his life Anjali (Katrina Kaif) who supports him financially. Ram (Suniel Shetty) is Nitin’s best friend and just like him, he also comes to Singapore to become rich but he ends up being a courier deliveryman. Ram loves a very rich girl Manpreet (Sameera reddy), but her high society parents will never approve of their marriage, as Ram is not wealthy. Harbans (Paresh Rawal) is a shrewd businessman who wants to avoid his debtors and multiply his income in any way. He has a son (Chunkey Pandey) whom he decides to marry off to a very rich girl so that he gets lot of dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet’s parents at a function and is very impressed by their high status. He introduces himself as a very wealthy businessman and decides to get his son married to Manpreet. Nothing seems to be going fine for Nitin and Ram and they receive tantrums from their girl friends as well. So they finally decide to kidnap a wealthy person and become rich. But the kidnap plan goes awry and both hide at a local hotel for the ransom money. Manpreet’s wedding reception is also scheduled at the same hotel. Soon they are joined by a set of characters including a Chinese don (Asrani), a hired assassin (Johnny Lever), an ACB police inspector (Sharat Saxena), a club dancer (Neha Dhupia), an ambassador (Vikram Gokhale), a young frustrated wife (Aditi Govitrikar), a letch (Shakti kapoor), a drunken waiter (Rajpal Yadav) and a dead body nobody wants to check in the hotel. All the fun and humor of this 2:45 minute movie has to be watched on silver screen.

Akshay kumar has done a tremendous job and his comic timing is simple perfect. Paresh Rawal has recreated of what he has done in Hera-Pheri. Sunil Shetty has done a decent work. Katrina kaif is glamorous and Sameera reddy has nothing much to do. Amongst the other characters, Johnny lever, Archana Puran Singh, Manoj Joshi, Asrani and Vikram Gokhale deserves special mention.

It is a typical Priyadharshan movie and if you don’t mind to keep away from logic, catches this movie at a theater near you. The production values are of high standards. Music by Pritam is alright and back ground score by Salim-Sulaiman is good. Cinematography by K.Ahambaram is excellent. Dialogues by Jay Master need a special mention. They are extra-ordinary.

Mickey (Aftab) is a 12-year old kid. His life is almost like a fairy tale. He has a beautiful family, a very good friend Bonnie and an angel on earth, 23 year old Mitika (Aamna Sharif). His life is shattered on one fateful day when he realizes that he is an adopted child and when his angel calls him a kid. A heart broken Mickey sits all alone until Hitchcock (Johnny Lever) appears. Hitchcock is a local street side clown and Mickey wishes for a miracle. To his astonishment, he wakes up the next morning and realizes that his wish has been granted. Initially, Mickey has a hard time convincing Bonnie that he is indeed his friend Mickey. The best thing for Mickey to get older is that he can get a chance to come closer to Mitika. He tries his best to impress her and eventually Mitika falls in love with him. Things get more complicated for Mickey when Mitika gets ready to marry him. To know what happened next, catch this movie at a theater near your place.

This movie is inspired by Tom Hanks starrer Big (1988). Though the movie is cute, it fades out in the later part. The scenes where Aftab is trying to woo Aamna have come out really well. The choice of subject is good and but the story lets you down. The romantic angle between the grown up kid and Aamna is not effective. Aftab has turned producer-writer for this movie. His act is impressive like a kid locked up in an adult body. Aamna Sharif has a terrific screen presence and has improved a lot in acting when compared to her debut film – Aaloo Chat. Johnny lever excels whenever he is on screen. The kid playing Bonnie is also good. Rati Agnihotri is good and the kids are full of energy. Riteish Deshmukh makes a special appearance at the end of the movie.

Director Glenn Baretto succeeded in giving the film a very soft romantic appeal within a fairy tale setting. It would have been much better if he had made the last few reels of the movie more gripping. Music has been handled well by Ankur Tewary, Xulfi, and Mickey McCleary. But one gets a feeling that there are too many songs in the second half of the movie. The best part of this movie is Keshav’s camera work, which is top-notch. He has captured the locales of Himachal Pradesh and Goa very well on celluloid. Choreography by Longine Fernandez (Slumdog Millionaire fame) is good.   On the whole, Aao wish karein is a cute, fun, clean romantic film. Having said that, the movie is engaging only in parts. Even less publicity is a big drawback for this movie to click at box-office.
