Dibru-Saikhowa National Park


Dibru is one of the largest national parks with 650 sq km standing tall and wide in order to protect the nature under its wings. The vibrant wildness has empowered the zone due to the park being on the banks of Brahmaputra River. It has provided heavenly support to many rare and endangered species.

Located about 13 km from Tinsukia town and approximately 515 km from Guwahati, Dibru is bounded in between the Arunachal hills in north and Dibru + Patkai hills in South.  In 1986 Dibru- Saikhowa national park was declared as wildlife sanctuary by adjoining Dibru and Saikhowa reserve forest + many other areas together.   The landmark of Dibru itself presents the visitors with energetic, vigorous beginning of their journey. The standing mountains on either side bring the exoticism into the identification of the national park as one of the very well preserved ethnic beauty spot by nature.

It enjoys tropical monsoon season with hot and wet summers. Oops! Humid summers. While summers give you annoying heat till 34˚C, winters give you cold yet soothing sensation up to 7˚C.  December and January being the coldest season, summers higher its tone during May, June and July. Still it remains worth visiting every time throughout.

The vegetation however includes the lusty semi-evergreen deciduous forest while the wild includes the roaring species of Royal Bengal Tiger.  Including those swampy wet zones species, it saves the branded tag of endangered species which actually are hardly seen.

Best visiting season is November to April. However, the reason of visit must be the fleet of semi wild horses known as Feral and white winged wood duck. The two entry points for tourists are at Guijan Ghat (10km from Tinsukia) and Saikhowa ghat.

Flora

It has a variety of mixed vegetation, ranging from 35.84% mixed moist forest, 9.50% degraded forest to 21.25% grasslands. The amazing part is the variety of flora. Species like Salix tetrasperma, Bischofia javanica, Dillenia indica, Bombax ceiba, Terminalia myriocarpa, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Mesua ferrea, Dalbergia sissoo, Ficus spp. etc. Also the dominating vegetation of the park are the grasses. They are also of different varieties like: Arundo donax, Imperata cylindrica, Phragmaties karka, Erianthus ravanea, Saccharum etc.

Fauna

There are innumerous animals residing out of which only 36 types have been recorded while rest others are still into the non-recorded list.  According to wildlife protection act, 1972 out of 36 recorded species 12 come under the protection list. Few of the species that can be ordered are Royal Bengal Tiger,

Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Jungle Cat, Sloth Bear, Dhole, Small Indian Civet, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Chinese Pangolin, Gangetic Dolphin, Slow Loris, Pig Tailed Macaque,Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped Langur, Hollock Gibbon, Asian Elephant, Wild Boar, amber, Hog Deer, barking Deer, Asiatic Water Buffalo, Feral Horses etc. Irrespective of these there are many species of herpeto fauna. Also there are 2 species of Monitor Lizards, 8 species of Turtles and 8 species of Snakes. However there are further 62 different species of fishes and more than 350 species of birds.

The very special species of birds are Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Great Grebe, Indian Shag, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Night Heron, Yellow Bittern, Openbill Stork, Black Stork, Large Whisstling Teal, Greylag Groose, Common Pintail, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot Billed Pelican, White Winged Duck, Bear's Poachard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Bengal Florican, Pale Capped Pigon,Great Pied Hornbill, March Babbler, Jardon's Babbler, Black-Breasted-Parrotbill etc.

 

Reaching the destination

By air: 40 km away from the town Tinsukia there is Dibrugarh after which the park has been named. From this point there are regular domestic flights available to major cities of India.

By railway: Dibrugarh is the nearest railway junction linked to the Dibru Park. Dibrugarh is linked with a broad gauge with the nearest station of Guwahati and with other cities with super and express trains by classification.

By road: Tinsukia has the head office of DFO wildlife division and being the nearest town to the Dibru national park, is only 10km and 50km away from the Guijan and Dhola entry point respectively. The road is provided with services of auto rickshaws, taxis both private and per person oriented and bus service.
