Five Things Not to Do in India
Etiquette in India is very much different from Western countries. This is due to vast differences in culture. Here is a list of five things which you shouldn't do when you travel to India.
==> Don't put on tight/revealing clothes: India is a conservative country. Though, cities are fast changing and adopting "modern" lifestyle, in rural places people are particularly conservative. While in India, avoid tight or revealing clothes. Cover your shoulders and legs. When you visit temples and other places of worship, appropriate clothing is especially important.
==> Do not wear shoes inside: In India, it is not considered good manners to wear shoes inside the home. Leave your shoes outside whenever you enter someone's home. When entering a building, if you see shoes at the entrance, it is an indication that you should remove yours too.
==> Don't touch objects with your feet or point your feet at others: In India, feet are considered unclean and so touching others or objects with your feet is not considered good manners. Some people may take offence. However, touching an elder's feet is considered as a mark of respect.
==> Don't touch food with your left hand: The left hand is considered unclean. Do not take food using your left hand. In some parts of India, especially the South, people do not even touch food with the left hand. Same goes for money. Never give money with your left hand.
==> Do not shake hands with women: India is very conservative in this regard. You can however say namaste with folded hands.
In India, people are usually very curious. You may have to face curious looks or stares all the time. People may also ask personal questions such as how much you earn, etc. Don't be offended as it is just out of curiosity.
