Kanyakumari is a popular tourist destination located at the Southern-most tip of India. It is located in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. During the British era, it was known as Cape Comorin.
Kanyakumari is named after the virgin goddess -- Kanyakumari Amman. Legend says that Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva did penance on the rocks located here to reach the hand of Lord Shiva. Due to this, Kanyakumari has religious significance. Every year, Hindus from all over India come to visit Kanyakumari.
Kanyakumari also attracts tourists from abroad who come to enjoy its beautiful sunsets and sunrises on its multicoloured beaches.

At Kanyakumari, the sunrise can be viewed at all times in the year. However, sunset is visible only after October 15 till March 15 from the southern-most tip. A nearby hill known as "Murugan Kundram" offers a panoramic view of sunrise and sunset over Kanyakumari. On full-moon days, one can view sunset and moonrise at the same time.
In the middle of the sea, there are two rocks. These are known as the "twin-rocks". It was on one of these rocks that Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian seer meditated for three days. Today, there are monuments of Swami Vivekananda and Saint Thiruvalluvar on these rocks.
