Mahabalipuram is an ancient town located in Tamil Nadu, South India. It is famous for his temples and architecture. It also has a beautiful beach. There are also many resorts that cater to the needs of tourists. Many tourists visit Mahabalipuram for its thriving backpacker scene.

Mahabalipuram was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is believed to have been named after the Pallava king Mamalla. It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th century, and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mahabalipuram is 31 miles away from Chennai (formerly Madras), on the Eastern Coast of India. It is 59 miles north of Pondicherry.

Mahabalipuram is approximately one hour's drive from Chennai. It can be reached by availing the bus service, or by hiring a taxi. The nearest railway station to Mahabalipuram is at a place called Chengalpattu which is 18 miles away. So, train is not a good option for traveling to Mahabalipuram. From Chennai, the taxi fare is usually around $20 (Rs. 1000 in local Indian currency). A bus ticket costs 50 cents (Rs. 25 approx).

Mahabalipuram is hot and humid. In summer, temperatures may reach up to 100 F. The town also experiences heavy rainfall in the monsoon season. The best time to visit Mahabalipuram is in December till march. During these months, it is dry and cool.

Mahabalipuram is notable for its numerous temples. Most famous of these temples is the Shore Temple, located right on the seashore. Other notable temples include the Five Rathas and "Arjuna's Penance", a huge rock carving that depicts Mahabharatha--an ancient Indian story.

Mahabalipuram has many good hotels and resorts. The best hotels cost about $200 per night. Some cheaper hotels may charge $40-100 per night. There are also some smaller guest houses in the town. These may be very cheap but they services they offer are very basic.

Though Mahabalipuram is a great place, there may be some dangers and annoyances. You may be pestered by local guides or beggars. Do not encourage them. In addition, the currents in the sea are particularly strong. Precautions should be taken while swimming in the sea.
